Wounded Healers

Only the wounded physician heals and it is only through surviving the personal pain and turmoil of challenging sufferings that one can acquire great wisdom and healing skills.  Carl Jung.

As healers the first step in tending to soul-injury both in ourselves and with our clients is to acknowledge our own woundedness, trace its origins, and to be present with it.  We can assess the depth of our Soul-Injury by answering the 10 questions of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale https://acestoohigh.com/got-your-ace-score/ which we use as a tool in assessing Complex Trauma.

The results of an informal survey of 100 licensed mental health providers conducted in October, 2018 indicate that 60% of respondents grew up living with one or both parents who had a mental health diagnosis.  A thwarted sense of belonging was reported by 57%, while 41% reported as subjects of physical abuse.

During our workshop on December 14, 2018, we will briefly examine how by avoiding contact with our own woundedness, at some level we are actually  sustaining our own stigmas and biases about mental illness and suicide.

Learning Objectives:

Identify and assess the risks of suicide among mental health professionals.

Identify specific factors that place practitioners at risk using the "Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale"

Examine Thomas Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicide and apply it personally.

Apply  7 key principles for tending to ourselves, our clients, families, and our community through the lens of "Soul Tending".
