“Trauma” is a word that seems to be showing up everywhere these days.  The trend has been for mental health organizations and practitioners to label themselves as providing “Trauma-Informed” care.  But aside from a catchy marketing term, what exactly does this mean?  This presentation is designed to provide a broad educational overview of psychological trauma, its manifestations and impact on individuals and society, and some core principles and approaches in providing ethical and effective treatment.

Learning objectives:

  • Explore how psychological trauma has been studied and conceptualized throughout history and what current research shows.
  • Discuss the neurobiology of trauma, its impact on individuals and society, and related implications for treatment.
  • Learn to conceptualize common psychological conditions from the perspective of a trauma-informed model.
  • Identify the various considerations present in simple and complex trauma therapy that may influence the course of treatment.
  • Discuss the role of the ethical and effective trauma therapist in providing high quality care.
  • Identify the latest, most effective approaches to trauma therapy
