Hiding in Plain Sight: Treatment Considerations for Males with Eating Disorders
Dr. Amy Boyers
Description: Although most clinicians acknowledge that eating disorders do not just affect females, very few have actually treated a significant number of cases in males. This is made worse by the fact that current research and treatment options are heavily oriented towards females which creates a gap in the availability of appropriate treatment settings for males. This talk will review how eating disorder diagnoses in males may present differently than in their female counterparts, identify male subgroups that are at particularly high risk for developing eating disorders (such as athletes and LGBTQ males), and also discuss shortcomings in current assessment tools and treatment settings. Additionally, this talk discusses common barriers to treatment for males that they may experience in the therapy office, in their families, and in our society/culture.
