Medications for Mental Illness: What Therapists Need to Know

    Jessica Turner, M.D.

As a therapist, you may be wondering how medication can fit into your treatment plan with your clients. Medication is often an effective treatment for mental illness, especially when used in combination with therapy.

There are many types of medications that are commonly used to treat mental illness, and the best medication for a particular client will depend on their individual needs. 3. Discuss the risks of medication, such as side effects and drug interactions.
    4. Describe which patients may benefit from genetic testing or blood work.

    Carolina Gaviria, LMHC, NCC, CEDS-S

I’m a bilingual/Spanish licensed mental health counselor, a national certified counselor, a certified eating disorders specialist and ieadp approved supervisor as well as certified EMDR therapist. I am committed to helping and supporting children, teens, and adults find freedom and inner peace from their eating disorder, depression, anxiety, and trauma.

I understand the concern about a loved one’s well-being when they are sad and anxious sometimes restricting, binging, and purging, or using drugs to self-medicate. I know how difficult it is for that person to just stop or change, especially when they don’t really know how. This is why I focus not only on the problem but also the solution teaching clients coping strategies and new ways of seeing the situation they are in. Depression and anxiety can create a cyclic pattern very difficult to break and eating disorders and addictions can become a very unhealthy coping mechanism to deal with inner pain.

As the co-founder of Home for Balance Psychotherapy Group, LLC and the Food & Mood Institute, I strongly believe in full recovery and the power of family and teamwork. I have over 20 years of experience as a mental health counselor, and I currently practice in the Coconut Creek area and online via secure platform. In my private practice I hold sessions in both, English and Spanish, and offer flexible hours. I’m very approachable and provide a safe and comfortable environment for clients to be themselves, while fully exploring the concerns that bring them to counseling. I’m also aware that every individual is different and offer personalized services to help you achieve your goals.

During the past 15 years I have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders, addictions and trauma. I also sit at the board of the International Association for Eating Disorders Professionals South Florida Chapter (iaedp) and have presented at numerous conferences on the impact of eating disorders. I’m committed to support individuals and families affected by eating disorders, and serve as a catalyst for education, prevention, and access to quality care.

    Ara Mascarenas, LMHC

I am a dedicated pre-licensed mental health therapist with a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. I have a wealth of experience in diverse clinical settings, including schools, clinics, and outpatient services. My focus has been on addressing mental health concerns, fostering healthy development, promoting social-emotional learning, and enhancing executive functioning skills.

Specializing in working with children aged 4 to 18, as well as young adults, I possess a deep understanding of the unique challenges and developmental needs that arise during these crucial stages of life. As a bilingual clinician fluent in both English and Spanish, I can effectively communicate and connect with clients from different cultural backgrounds, fostering a sense of comfort and understanding.

My passion lies in working with children and adolescents facing a range of issues, including behavior challenges, navigating divorce, recovering from traumatic experiences, ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I provide compassionate and tailored support to facilitate healing and growth.

Additionally, I value community involvement and I sit on the board of the Mental Health Counselors Association of Palm Beach.

Non-Binary:  Understanding Sexuality, Gender Diversity, and Alternative Sexual Lifestyles

    Dr. Carol Clark

Abstract: Young adults are surrounded by conflicting messages on sexuality and sexual expression.  State legislatures, including Florida, have made it risky to identify as “other than gender assigned at birth”.  As therapists, it is critical that we understand a broad range of sexual preference and expression and build a language of acceptance and inclusion that lessens the suffering of those who present to us as such.  We need to understand especially the ways emerging young adults talk about and define themselves and “find their way” sexually.  This discussion/workshop will explore a broad range of topics including definitions of lesbian, bi-sexual, gay, transgender, gender dysphoria, non-binary as well as current and expected Florida legislative updates on these topics.

We will discuss forces that shape a person’s search for sexual identity, including birth gender and gender expression, traumatic events especially around “coming out/disclosure” and public statements of identity and sexual preference.

Important in this talk will be some of the Florida legislative changes that have made it difficult to Support LGBTQ population.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Define LGBTQ+
    2. Articulate the difference between sexuality and gender.
    3. Define gender dysphoria.
    4. Explain a typical process of “transitioning.”
    5. Explain when to refer a struggling client to different levels of care, including medical.

She has been a Continuing Education provider for nurses, psychologists, counselors and social workers throughout South Florida and is a Certified Supervisor for counseling interns.

In her private practice, Dr. Clark utilizes a variety of interventions to effectively assist clients seeking personal growth and mental health in their lives. She is Certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and specializes in treating sex addiction and gender dysphoria.

As she recognized a commonality in the people she saw over the years, which mirrored those issues she dealt with in her personal life, she conceptualized a way of looking at our highly stimulating lifestyles as the result of a perpetually addictive state that disconnects us from each other and the universal life force. It is from this personal growing awareness that she wrote her book Addict America: The Lost Connection – a life-altering guide for all people and an excellent clinical resource. Addict America: The Lost Connection describes and defines a new viewpoint as to the elemental nature of addiction and how it affects our brains. By understanding the fundamental nature of addiction and applying the healing strategies set forth in this book, readers will find themselves reestablishing Connections in their lives that seemed lost forever. www.DrCarolClark.com  www.AddictAmerica.net

Obsessed:  Demystifying the Diagnosis & Treatment of OCD

    Melanie Smith, PhD, LMHC, CEDS-C

    Description:

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by obsessions (repetitive, intrusive, and distressing thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed in response to the obsessions). It's important to note that treatment for OCD typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and ongoing supportive measures and that most clinicians do not get specialized training in treating OCD as part of traditional clinical education.  While many clinicians may find treating individuals with OCD to be daunting and intimidating; quality evidence-based treatments, such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are available and highly effective in managing OCD symptoms and improving quality of life.  As OCD often co-occurs with other mental health conditions, this training will include considerations for differential diagnosis, as well as guidance on how to develop treatment plans when individuals experience co-morbid OCD, including the use of exposure and response prevention (ERP).

    Learning Objectives:

    1)      Participants will be able to assess clients for overlapping symptom presentations and differentiate OCD from other diagnoses.
    2)      Participants will be able to explain the rationale for utilizing emotional exposure strategies for the management of OCD symptoms.
    3)      Participants will be able to create an individualized exposure hierarchy using a sample case.

No Escape: What SUDs and Neuroscience Teach Us About Living Our Best Lives

    Judith Grisel, Ph.D

    Description:

To be human is to be discontent. For as long as we’ve been on the planet, human beings have sought ways to dodge unpleasant experiences and improve lackluster ones. This tendency is responsible for all addictions, but is also the catalyst for many of our greatest achievements. Explore the evolutionary imperative that fosters “using”, as well as its benefits and costs, with Judy Grisel, a person in long-term recovery as well as a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Bucknell University.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Illustrate how the brain ensures discontentedness to promote wellbeing
    2. Describe how addictive substances, as well as process addictions like overeating, gambling, or compulsive use of pornography, exploit and undermine brain circuits that are critical for a successful life
    3. Understand what the pandemic of ‘using’ has to teach us about coping effectively with suffering

The Four Relationship Styles: How Attachment theory can help you in your search for lasting love

    Anita Knight Kuhnley, Ph.D., LPC

    Description:

Attachment serves a regulatory function and is the part of the attachment behavioral system. This internal system is activated when we are under stress. Based on our autobiographical narrative and relationship blueprints we develop one of four relationship styles. Each style has unique strengths and challenges. Identifying your primary style and understanding the neurobiology of your style and how it influences emotional intelligence, emotion regulation, and the activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system are critical. Many of the symptoms we see manifest in the counseling office are associated with attachment injuries, psychological insults, or relational trauma. Treatment interventions and assessments can be tailored to include research-based interventions from an attachment informed and trauma-informed approach. Participants will gain a tool kit of assessments and interventions to use that help promote secure attachment and emotion regulation.

    Learning Objectives:

    1.     Identify and assess the four attachment styles.
    2.     Assess activation of the attachment behavioral system and a typology of trauma responses.
    3.     Apply interventions from a tool kit of research-based techniques to enhance attachment security and emotion regulation.
